In the Balance looks at the social side of global and local environmental crises. It asks how people’s behaviour, ideas, and perceived interests affect and are affected by the changing planet. It joins the search for more equitable and regenerative economies and political systems. In so doing, it paints justice and strategy as two sides of the same coin.
Each issue looks at a place, market, or movement through this lens to help you make sense of this feedback loop. Whether you’re a professional, an activist, or just someone who cares for life on this planet, understanding change is the first step to creating a better future.

Who I am
My name is Rob Macquarie. I research economic and social policies for climate and ecological protection, to advise governments, development institutions, and campaign coalitions. In the Balance is based both on my professional work and my personal values. The best place to learn more about the former is at my LinkedIn and you can find more of my writing on openDemocracy and the New Statesman. (See my Substack profile for other socials.)
I have lived a fortunate life, growing up in the south-east of the UK. Recently I have been living nomadically. Travel gives the gift of showing us the sheer variety and abundance of natural and human ecosystems on Earth. The layered complexity, manifest unfairness, and staggering beauty of this world that we share are what In the Balance intends to capture. I hope it contributes to breaking down the walls that confine us.
